Marcelo is an economist with a master’s degree in political economy and a PhD in social sciences. He has been a researcher at Tricontinental: Institute for Social Research since 2021, where he has conducted research on the Brazilian labour market, Marxist dependency theory, development and the effects of agribusiness in Brazil, China’s developmental policies, and the new right in Brazil (specifically on the ways in which neoliberal ideas are reproduced in our society). He also led the Observatory on the Conjuncture of Latin America and the Caribbean (OBSAL) in the Brazil office from 2021 to 2023 and is an economics professor at Paulista University (Unip) and the author of the books How to Understand the Brazilian Economy: Questions in their Right Place (Para entender a economia brasileira: as questões en seu devido lugar, 2024) and Pandemics, Crisis, and Capitalism (Pandemias, Crise e Capitalismo, 2021), both published by Expressão Popular.
